Before you Make The Switch to solar energy you probably have a lot of questions.
How does it work? What are the costs? What is my ROI? How do I benefit? We want to answer all of your questions to make sure you’re comfortable and informed before you Make The Switch. We answer some of the most asked solar questions below but please don’t hesitate to contact us if you want more information – we’d be happy to help you learn more.
Is solar worth it? The short answer is ‘yes’ and the slightly longer answer is ‘of course it is – absolutely!’. Whether you are a homeowner or a business owner, Making The Switch to solar energy will be worth it all the way. At Switch Energy, we customize each solar system to meet the unique energy needs of every home or business owner. Under the Ontario solar incentive of Net Metering and the federal tax rebates for businesses, you have the potential to cut back on your Hydro bill by up to 85%. After 7-15 years of having solar you will be saving money instead of spending it on Hydro. When you Make The Switch to Solar you start owning your energy instead of renting it.
Yes there are!
Ontario currently has the Net Metering program where home and business owners can offset their Hydro costs by exchanging excess electricity their solar systems produce for Grid Credits. These Grid Credits can then be used during low solar production times so you can continue to save even when you’re not producing at peak capacity. Learn more about the Ontario Net Metering program by clicking the link below.
Additionally, the federal government has just recently announced new tax incentives for businesses who are interested in investing in eco-friendly equipment such as solar panels. We all know that solar panels gather energy from the sun, but how exactly does it work? In the simplest of terms, when ultraviolet rays from the sun hit a solar cell, those particles of light knock electrons free from atoms which generates a flow of electricity. This electricity is either used by a source, stored in a battery, or distributed throughout an electrical grid. To summarize; the light particles from the sun that hit the earth are so powerful that they can knock electrons from an atomic structure and solar panels are able to harness that energy from the sun.
Solar panels will not damage your roof. Our installation teams have more than 10 years of experience with an excellent track record. By Making The Switch you will actually extend the lifespan of your roof because the panels will protect your shingles from damaging elements like the sun, rain, and snow. Having a solar system can increase the lifespan of your roof by up to 20 years. Need to re-shingle your roof? No problem – it takes less than a day for us to remove and store your solar system, and even less time to reinstall it once your roof is re-shingled.
Solar panels are built of strong, durable material and can withstand the extreme weather that winter brings. Winter time is not a concern for homeowners who have gone solar for a number of reasons:
- The cold has no negative effect on solar panels and their energy production; In fact, the cold can actually make solar panels more efficient.
- Snowfall may prevent solar panels from producing energy at max capacity, however, snow accumulation on solar panels is generally not a concern for homeowners because of how they are installed and operate.
- Fewer sunlight hours and lower production rates in the winter time can be easily made up by the government incentive of Net Metering.

Cloudy days might sound like the Achilles heel of solar panels, but this is simply not the case. Even on the cloudiest of days, a single solar unit will still work at 25% efficiency. As mentioned above, solar panels convert ultraviolet rays from the sun into a usable energy output. These ultraviolet rays are so energized that they easily pass through cloud cover allowing your solar panels to work efficiently. This is the same reason why you should wear sunblock during the summer even on cloudy days because of how powerful ultraviolet light is.
A Black on Black solar system works slightly less efficiently than a Classic solar system. This is part of the reason why the Black on Black system costs a bit more as you will need more panels to work at the same efficiency. However, the main difference between the two is mostly an aesthetic one. The Black on Black solar system is built to look more sleek when installed on a roof. Check out our Solar Systems page to learn more about the solar systems we can offer you.
The median price for a solar system is $25 000. However, the cost of your customizable solar system will depend on your roof size and energy demands. The Ontario Net Metering program will also allow your system to pay for itself after 7-15 years. Or, if you buy your system outright, you can expect your solar system to start saving you more money than your Hydro bill is costing you. Making The Switch to solar is an investment that will save you thousands of dollars and help the environment in the long run.
